Case Study: Targeted Catchment Investigation (TCI) Project x SymTerra
SymTerra empowered Lanes to define project criteria and objectives on a Monday and deliver a fully functioning real-time project reporting dashboard by Friday. That pace is unmatched and has left the client genuinely impressed. Coupled with their outstanding one-on-one mentoring throughout the project’s evolution, we couldn’t be more thrilled with what SymTerra has helped us achieve.”

The Challenge
The Targeted Catchment Investigation (TCI) programme was a new process for Lanes, requiring coordination between hundreds of field engineers, multiple delivery partners, and Thames Water’s operational teams. With no established framework to manage this complexity, communication was fragmented, work packs were duplicated, and reporting lacked consistency. Manual processes and spreadsheets slowed issue resolution, making it difficult to maintain data quality and accountability across the supply chain.
The TCI programme required coordination across hundreds of field engineers, multiple delivery partnersand Thames Water’s operational teams. Lanes sought a software system to unify communication and reporting across all sites.
For a subcontractor working closely with a tier‑one contractor, clarity and accountability are essential. TCI needed a way to:
Share site updates in real time
Capture issues as they happen
Keep a clear, auditable record of site activity
Communicate confidently with both their own teams and the wider project team
The Solution
Lanes Group deployed SymTerra to unify communication and reporting across all TCI sites.
Using SymTerra engineers capture inspections, asset data, and site photos & videos directly from the field via mobile. These are instantly visible in real-time dashboards and automated reporting digests for managers and Thames Water leads.
Benefits:
Unified communication: Live dashboards and report digests eliminate silos between office and field teams.
Rapid deployment: A repeatable rollout model enables new regional launches in as little as 10 days.
Transparency and accountability: Every inspection, photo, and update is timestamped, traceable, and linked to assets and RAG risk categories.
Efficiency gains: Replaces manual reporting, saving hours of admin per engineer per week. Managers can generate reports in less than 2 minutes and share as required.
Safety and quality improvements: Structured data and visibility reduce defects and accelerate corrective action.
Lessons Learned:
The TCI project proved that digital communication and real-time collaboration reporting can transform infrastructure delivery. By embedding SymTerra into daily operations, Lanes and Thames Water demonstrated how collaborative technology enables faster rollouts, better data integrity, and fewer errors. The model is now a repeatable blueprint for transparent communication across future programmes.
“SymTerra is easy, very useful, and quite glad we’ve got it.”
